I can't speak for the 680s, but I bought a set of the 560s and had to return them twice for problems with the power supplies. When they work they're great speakers, but they're definately not perfect.
Any of the volume controls on the speakers don't actually affect headphones that are plugged into them, as far as I can tell. I don't have anything more helpful to say, sorry.
