Check out this video of a Maldivian flying fox (Pteropus hypomelanus) cruising by before sunset. These large fruit bats (wingspan up to 1 m or 3 feet!) are the only native mammals on many atolls. Key ecological role: primary pollinators of native trees like coconut (Cocos nucifera) and seed dispersers for species including Pandanus and Calophyllum. Spring and summer is our busiest time of year. As the weather warms up, heavily pregnant females start getting themselves into trouble and once babies are born our rescues significantly pick up. Often when a baby flying fox is in trouble you don’t see them, you can only hear them calling. They have a distinct chirping call which is very different to how an adult flying fox sounds.
