As the name suggests, the howler monkey is a vociferous animal and their calls can be heard clearly up to three miles away. The Howler’s specialised voice box allows it to expand and amplify sounds and its territorial boundaries in the wild are mapped out by howling sessions with neighbouring troops. When I met this beautiful two-month-old Venezuelan red howler monkey, it was receiving care at a wildlife rehabilitation center in Manaus, Brazil (Ibama) with the hope that it might one day return to the wild. With fruits making up the majority of this species’ diet, the howler monkey plays a vital role in maintaining the health of the forests it calls home.
